After creating a test with Schoolyear, you may want to enable or change certain settings. You can do this via the settings widget of the test. This is the menu where all the settings of a Schoolyear test can be found and adjusted.
Until 01-11-2026, you can optionally use this new method by enabling it.
From 01-11-2026, this method will be the default.
Where can I find the settings widget?
Accessing the settings widget from the Schoolyear dashboard
- Log in to your institution's Schoolyear environment.
- Navigate to the dashboard of the test whose settings you want to adjust.
- Click edit test in the top right.
Accessing the settings widget from a test application
Most test applications integrated with Schoolyear offer a direct button ('Configuration') in their interface to open Schoolyear's Settings Widget. Ask the supplier of the test application where you can find this button.
Which settings can I adjust?
Please note: If you created the test via an integration, certain test settings, such as the name and start and end times, may be sent from the integration. To change these, you will need to adjust them in the test application.
Workspace settings
Under these settings, you can adjust the settings of the workspace for this test.
Browser
Here you can adjust the test's allowlist. The allowlist (also known as a whitelist) is a list of URLs that are permitted during the test. These are the URLs of the test application in which the student takes the test and (optionally) additional websites that serve as resources. URLs that are not on the allowlist are automatically blocked for the student. Enter the URL that you want to add to the allowlist for this test in the address bar. Then click Add.
Things to bear in mind when adding URLs to the allowlist:
- Start page: The start page is the page first shown to the student when Schoolyear starts. This is often the login page or the start page of the test. You can set only one start page per test. You can change the start page by clicking the blue flag next to the specific URL. Please note: when the test was created via the test application (through the integration), you cannot change the start page.
- Allow all pages on this site: When adding an additional URL, you can choose to allow the entire website (for example, all videos on www.youtube.com) or only one page (one video on youtube.com). By default, the option to allow all pages on the site is enabled. Move the slider to the left if students may access only a specific URL during the test.
- Hidden redirect URLs: Some websites use multiple URLs when loading a page. In these cases, you are briefly redirected to another URL without noticing. We call these URLs hidden 'redirect URLs', and they must therefore be added to the allowlist separately. We recommend always testing the URLs first before adding them to the allowlist for an actual test. For a test created from the test application via the integration, we have already filled in the redirect URLs for you.
In this menu, you can also choose whether to enable spell checking in the browser. To do this, enable the checkbox for Enable spell checking in the browser. By default, Schoolyear blocks the spell checker that is normally available in a browser.
Please note: Schoolyear blocks the spell checker built into the browser. A test application may also have its own spell-checking feature, which Schoolyear does not block.
Files
Here you can set how files are handled during the test. You have two options in this menu:
- Prepare files: You can prepare files that students can use as test materials during the test.
- Allow students to upload files: If you want students to upload test files via Schoolyear, enable the checkbox for Allow students to upload files? .
Apps
If you want students to be able to use applications in addition to websites, you can configure this in this menu. For more information about the different options we offer here, see:
- Web Apps: Use this option to use only web-based applications or pages, such as test applications or websites.
- Virtual Desktop: Planning a test with desktop applications
If you cannot select an option, these additional services are not enabled in your environment. Contact support@schoolyear.com for more information.
Integrity
In this tab, you can adjust the settings that affect the integrity of the test:
Test password
In some specific scenarios, a test requires a Test password as an additional layer of security. This is, for example, the case when using the Canvas or Brightspace integration, where the access code for the LMS is used by the Schoolyear integration and therefore cannot be set or used by teachers.
When this functionality is enabled, students can start the test only after correctly entering the specified test password during the Schoolyear start-up process.
For more information about how this functionality works, see: How do you use the Schoolyear Test password?
Please note: this functionality, like all password fields, is case-sensitive. Example: Fiets and fiets are two different Test passwords.
Device check-in
Device check-in adds physical location verification to the test start-up process. This is particularly relevant for BYOD assessments where other mitigating measures, such as a test password or login code, are not sufficient to mitigate the identified location risk. For more information about this functionality and how to enable it, see: How do you use Schoolyear device check-in?
Require student login (formerly Workspace Authentication)
When Workspace Authentication is enabled, each Schoolyear workspace is linked to a specific student via Single Sign-On (SSO). If Workspace Authentication is not enabled, each workspace is counted as unique. This may result in one student using multiple licences.
For more information about Workspace Authentication, see the following article: How does workspace authentication work?
Details
In this menu, you can adjust the details of the test:
Test name
Here you set the name of the test.
If you created a test via an integration, the test name is passed on through the integration.
Practice exam (formerly Device Check)
By default, Schoolyear treats every session as an actual test. With this option, you can turn a Schoolyear session into a practice exam. A practice exam works in the same way as a Device check. As with a device check, only a limited number of practice exams are available to a student every seven days.
If you enable this setting, a student will need to log in with Single Sign-On when starting the session. Once this has been completed, the student can start the Schoolyear environment. The fraud screens are not active for this session. This setting is useful when you would like students to experience the full test flow of Schoolyear in combination with an integrated test application without surveillance.
Please note: Never use this setting for an actual test.
Time slot
Here you can set the test time slot in Schoolyear. You can choose to start the test as soon as possible or set a specific time slot. After a test has been created, you can adjust the selected time slot here.
If you created a test via an integration, the test time is passed on through the integration.
